KonoSuba 3 – 09 – Blessed With Good Friends

Kazuma, Aqua, and Megumin don’t take Darkness’ abrupt goodbye note sitting down. They stand outside the front gate of her mansion, chanting her name and demanding to see her, but when the guards come they scatter. All the while she’s holed up in her room, refusing any contact. She probably knows that if they get to her, they could convince her not to do what she believes she needs to.

Ever the practical sort, Kazuma immediately heads to the guild to find a replacement tank. But Megumin tags along, and not out of curiosity. She uses her chuuni verbal bombast to scare any potential candidates away. Kazuma knows she did it on purpose, too. To Megumin, it’s far too early to give up on Darkness.

In one of the more random and inessential detours in KonoSuba history, Kazuma decides to help out his fellow adventurer Dust, who is worried his cute buddy Rin is being tricked by an unscrupulous nobleman. Kazuma is pretty certain Dust has been stalking Rin, but when they find a set of red underwear in the nobleman’s room, Dust gets an idea.

Kazuma, perhaps still reeling from Darkness’ departure (or simply bored), assists Dust by snapping photos of him in the lingerie. But when Rin and the nobleman return, Rin quickly escorts Kazuma out, and then explains that the nobleman was interested in Dust all along, not her, and Dust just served himself up on a silver platter.

Things pick up that night when Kazuma agrees to use his Lurk ability to infiltrate Darkness’ mansion. Megumin is clearly happy Kazuma is back on board with getting her back, while Aqua buffs him with all manner of enhancements, including a voice-mimicking ability that allows him to find Darkness’ room.

When he uncovers Darkness’ mouth she shouts “Intruder!” but when the guards arrive he re-covers her mouth and says many scandalous things in in her voice, instantly trashing her reputation with the guards by confirming the rumors about her. Of course, the thought of the guards thinking she’s trash only excites Darkness more.

Silliness aside, Darkness allows Kazuma to stay long enough so that she can explain that she needs to be married off to Lord Aldarp to repay a family debt, and that’s all there is to it. Masochist she may be, her honor still will not allow a commoner like Kazuma to pay it on her behalf, even if Kazuma only sees it as a friend helping another out. On that note, Darkness comes very close to bedding Kazuma when he comments on her shredded abs and totally kills the mood.

Darkness and the guards chase Kazuma about the mansion, and he eventually ends up in Darkness’ dad’s bedroom, where he contemplates his imminent demise from natural causes that cannot be undone by healing or resurrection magic. Her dad can tell Kazuma is here as a concerned friend, and Kazuma can tell her dad is a shrewd and highly perceptive fellow.

Their pleasant chat is interrupted by Darkness, and Kazuma asks her one more time to forget about this silly debt and come home. When she doesn’t, he makes his escape in the most uncool way possible, slamming into a window that was much stronger than he thought. He warns Darkness that he’ll only come back to help her if she cries for help.

In truth, he’s not wrong that even if he’s had his fill trying to convince her tonight, Megumin and Aqua will not accept her leaving the party. In other words, this isn’t over.
