GARO: Honoo no Kokuin – 06

garo60

Santa Bard: where Leon was conceived in the flames that burned his mother to death. Where it all began. And also, where Mendoza is building a Demon Army with which to hold onto power. Leon and Herman arrive here far earlier than I would have thought, especially if this is just a 12 or 13-episode show..

garo61

This week, we get a parallel father-son story, though one that ends unhappily, as the city’s foremost swordssmith learns of his son Sergi’s death when his sword is returned to him. Only the sword isn’t just a sword, but a vessel for his dead son’s soul, no doubt twisted into horrordom by his experiences in the shadowy Knighthood of the Black.

garo62

Herman wants to get the lay of the land — preferably by getting laid — and it doesn’t even take long for the comely Leon to get surrounded by ladies, one of them Emma, who is still following them. Considering those ladies may have been trying to roll him, her presence was beneficial, and she gives the quick-to-anger Leon some free advice: quick getting all bent out of shape by every little thing and grow up.

garo63

He does just that by paying for the food a young urchin stole from a merchant, catching the attention of Julio, who was once an urchin himself, and was saved by his adoptive father and boss: the swordsmith with the demon possession problem.

garo64

The two father-son duos enjoy a meal together, which turns out to be a perfect opportunity for Herman and Leon to pick up on the fact that something is very wrong with Julio’s dad.

garo65

Of nights, he takes a terrifying Horror form and goes after Santa Bard soldiers who won’t tell him where his son is. His possession by Sergi’s sword was, in a way, a result of him not being able to let go of Sergi and let him move on. Although, from the image up top, it’s not as if the guy had a lot of choice in the matter.

garo66

Herman dons his Zoro armor and does his thing, father v. father, Herman’s killing of the Horor means Julio is an orphan again, but he’s an orphan in the city’s top smithy and still has a decent support system. He’s in a place where he can determine his future with his own hands, which is basically a more literal version of Leon’s situation.

garo68

But the smith-horror was just a glorified side-quest, considering what the Knighthood is up to, which Herman and Emma confer about. Mendoza is also aware of their presence, and one of his loyal associates vows to deal with them (though Mendoza doesn’t seem to care either way).

Gundam: G no Reconguista – 07

gung71

I’m loath to try to keep analyzing what went on in this episode, because…I’m not entirely sure what went on in this episode. I can tell you it was a very Gundam-y Gundam-loaf, and that I’ll do the best I can.

Mr. Mask, two weeks removed from his stunning defeat, gathers his men into a huddle, having been given another chance to retrieve the G-Self.

Any questions? …
Any questions NOT related to my mask?

gung72

Bellri’s mother continues to complain about the military buildup going on without her leave, but seems powerless to do anything about it. Then she laughs out loud for NO REASON (unless she was laughing at the hippo head trophy on the wall), boards a vintage space glider, and pretends to not know what she’s doing when she “accidentally” takes off. Turns out it was all an act so that she could looking for her son…I guess? Seems like a vintage glider with no spacesuit isn’t the best way to do that, but whatever.

gung73

Speaking of good ideas, Klim gets Rara into the cockpit of the G-Self, because she likes napping in its palm. Yes, by all means, let’s give the erratic, barely-lucid amnesiac with a fish fixation control over the rare, giant killbot!

gung74

When the Capital Army detects the Megafauna on grainy video — actually an inflatable decoy — Mask’s squadron nears, and Bellri has to pilot a different, less awesome mobile suit, the name of which escapes me because every other word in the dialogue of this show is a proper noun I don’t remember the significance of. “Deploy the Waldensteiners over the Genius outside of the Ceres Strip, before the Chiclids and Walleyes launch!”

gung75

Mr. Genius Klim gets into another fight with Mask, and again, proves he’s hardly a genius when it comes to mobile suit combat. He’s more of a “looks like that annoying kid from Last Exile” genius. Who says things like this:

If you would kindly be shot down!

gung76

Rara’s joyride in the G-Self is short-lived, as she quickly falls into the sea and is about to drown when Bellri snatches her up. I guess that’s better than the G-Self awakening Rara’s memories, having her go berserk and attack her own side.

gung78

Then Bellri goes after Mask and gets G-Self all busted up, and they both yell even though I don’t think there’s an open comms, so they’re really just yelling at themselves in their cramped cockpits, which you’d think would hurt your ears! The battle is broken up by a huge green mecha gunship thingy, leading Aida to deliver this gem of a conversation…with herself:

Father has even had things like that developed? But…It saved our lives.

I do not recommend watching this dubbed in English. Oh, and Bellri’s pretty much over killing his instructor, so Yay!

Denki-gai no Honya-san – 06

dgnhs63“STOP SMELLING ME!”

Denki-Gai no Honya-san episode 6 goes all the way back to being a half way sane show about Sensei-chan making manga and Umi-kun being the only thing that keeps her from totally falling apart!

If that makes this week’s helping of crazy sound a little tame, well… it was!

dgnhs64

Sensei needs to make a deadline. Umi-kun and Hiotan volunteer to help her. They help her for 4 days, each day after working a full day at the store. Umi-kun stays at night to help too, and make sure sensei actually sleeps and/or doesn’t stay in ‘baby mode’ for too long.

dgnhs65

On the day of the submission, right after the final page is inked, Hiotan pours ink all over it and WAHHHHHHH crying. Everyone is crying.

dgnhs61

Later, Hiotan and Director’s X tie Sensei to a chair in an undisclosed location that looks like the war-room set from Doctor Strangelove! They have one goal and one goal only: to address Sensei’s utter lack of girl power and they’re using the secret footage shot by Director’s store cams to do it!

Sensei is, ba Director’s narrated standards, appallingly ungirly. She even gets an ungirly 5-hit combo for wiping herself down with a wet-nap and showering in the store sink!

dgnhs62

What to say? Denki-Gai no Honya-san was good this week, in that it was occasionally funny and full of love for it’s core romance, but that romance has never been that interesting. Heck, the ‘i can’t finish my manage help me’ freak out plot isn’t that interesting either!

What saves this week is the second act, where we back track and retroactively see all the gross and silly things that Sensei was doing off camera and before she had help. Her own embarrassment about all this was pretty funny too.

AND NOW: 20 Anime Soft Drink Scenes

1. Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai – 01Ito-en Tea and Suntory BOSS

Welcome to the first of RABUJOI’s new “AND NOW…” Series, inspired by a similar segment on HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

We begin with the common anime practice of having characters purchase, offer, and drink canned and bottled soft drinks — often spoofs on real brands — from the vending machines ubiquitous in Japan. Being in an anime is apparently thirsty work!

Here’s just a small sampling of the practice from our Fall 2014 shows:

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken – 06

otaku61

I Don’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying takes us on a ‘one of the characters gets sick’ episode. Except it really doesn’t, because Kaoruta-chan’s sudden illness/falling to the floor doesn’t get played up in the regular way, nor is it used as a ‘sign of deeper issues’; not medical ones anyway…

otaku64

So Kaoruta-chan is, apparently, a heavy smoker. Or she’s started recently. Or who knows? We’ve never seen her smoke and we don’t see her smoke during this episode so I don’t know what to make of this sudden new ‘fact.’

In any event, her friend doctor tells her to stop smoking and then, later, tells her she’ll have to stay not smoking until after the baby is born. Language wise, I don’t have the nuance to know if this was ‘in general’ or if Kaoruta is actually pregnant now?

otaku63

Basically, I have no idea what is going on this week. We meet several of Kaoruta’s friends that, if we’ve seen before, it was only for 7 seconds in the second episode. We also meet a guy who I have to assume is Kaoruta’s brother but we’ve never seen him before either and none of the scenes make any sense without knowing that…

otaku66

So… yeah. IDUWmHiS was cute, this week — even a little coherent in it’s relationships — but narratively? I have no idea what is going on and there weren’t any jokes again.

A lack of humor and a lack of ‘weirdness’ doesn’t bode well for this show. I can’t imagine watching a 180-second long ‘drama’ each week. I just can’t.

Ai Tenchi Muyo! – 20

atm201

ATM! plunges us straight into the first sports festival event, an obstacle course between Hachiko and Yuki that quickly spirals into an extremely free-wheeling affair, what with the use of Hachiko’s bokken and Yuki’s Gouriki-kun.

atm202

There’s order within the chaos, though, as each character acts according to their strengths – and weaknesses. When Gouriki snatches Hachiko’s sword, she reverts to a scared little girl…but Momo, ever the cheerful, inspiring leader, is able to get Hachiko to carry on long enough to recover her sword – and her normal personality.

atm203

Thanks to Touri’s hacking of Gouriki, Hachiko is able to defeat Gouriki and win the race, while Yuki can only slap her cheeks in disbelief and outrage at her defeat. 50 points to the White Team. On to the next event!
